Make America Great Again - Loose Lips

Microphone on a stand in a meeting hall.

This is the second post about Making America Great Again. The first one can be found here.

"A slip of the lip sinks ships." I used to hear this phrase a lot when I was growing up. It came to my mind after hearing former president Trump say something about "if he doesn't win the election, there is going to be a bloodbath." I did a quick Google search and found this article on Wikipedia.com. I'll share a snippet of the explanation here:

Loose lips sink ships is an American English idiom meaning "beware of unguarded talk." The phrase originated on propaganda posters during World War II, with the earliest version using the wording loose lips might sink ships. The phrase was created by the War Advertising Council and used on posters by the United States Office of War InformationThis type of poster was part of a general campaign to advise servicemen and other citizens to avoid careless talk that might undermine the war effort.

Former President Trump, who is a candidate for the 2024 election, made a statement that got people talking, as always. He was talking about the Automobile Industry being taxed if they allowed China to ship electric cars to the U.S. when he said, "That won't happen if he's elected president, but if he's not, there will be a bloodbath." A bloodbath?

Some people are saying that it was a terrible thing for him to say, while others are defending him, saying he didn't mean anything by it and that he meant the automobile industry would take a bloodbath.

Some people are saying this was similar to what he said about going to the nation's capital on the same day people stormed the capital and caused some deaths of law enforcement officers. I won't try to get into his head and figure out why he said it. He's not the only politician who has said more than he should've said. For that matter, we all say things we shouldn't have said. Or what we said was the truth, just the wrong time. So, without sitting in the seat of judgment, let's see what's written in the Scriptures about talking too much - saying the wrong things.

Out of the Abundance of the Heart

Luke 6:45

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Jesus was teaching one of His parables called "Parable of the Blind Leading the Blind." He identified the one who hypocrites judging other people unrighteously. Then He said a good tree doesn't bear bad fruit, and vice versa. Then Jesus let us know how to identify good and evil men. It's simple. A good man conversation will either be good or bad based on what's in his heart.

The Power Of The Tongue

Proverbs 18:21

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

We can use our conversation to build up or tear down. It can be used to build someone up or sink them deeper into despair. A loose lip put warships in danger during World War II, and a loose lip is a danger to everyone today.

Father I pray this morning for You to have mercy on our country. We have been quick to say we're one nation under God, but we have gone so far away from you when it comes to making just and moral laws and how we treat other people from other countries and right here on our own soil. Please forgive us for our hypocritical ways. Please forgive us for the cruelty with which we have replaced kindness. The only way to make America Great again is to seek you and find out what we must do.

-In the name of Jesus. Amen.
